Product sketches

What are product sketches?

As the name implies, it basically is sketching your final product. This will give us an idea of what we want our final product to look like.

Sketching/drawing are key techniques in designing products. It is regarded as the primary method by which product designers externalize the design concepts of a product. More importantly, sketches or drawings aid comprehension and provide visual cues for potential product tweaks and adjustments.

Ever heard of the phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words”? The ability to represent one’s means of effective visual methods such as sketching or drawing opens doors for better communication between product designers and clients. What this basically means is that there would be better communication between supplier and clients as we can see how we want the products to look like.

From this, we were tasked to learn how to sketch different types of lines. Straight lines, curve lines, circles.

One point perspective

A one point perspective drawing means that the drawing has a single vanishing point. Usually directly opposite the viewer’s eye and usually on the horizon line. All lines parallel with the viewer’s line of sight recede to the horizon towards the vanishing point. This means that the drawing should be from a view that’s facing one direction, and you can see the product from a 3D view.

Knowing this, we were tasked to start sketching objects, such as a milk carton.

Two point perspective

2 point perspectives are, as the name suggests, defined by 2 vanishing point that represent  2 convergence points an infinite distance away. This means that we should be able to draw the product from 2 perspectives; one from each side of the page so that we have a 3D effect and an almost all around view of the product.

We were again tasked to draw a 2 point perspective of a book. Thereafter, knowing this, we drew an example of how our final product would be like in the end.

We were then asked to draw our OWN product.

we drew a 2 point perspective of our deodorizer. that way, we can see our product from 2 perspectives from a 3D perspective.

Design Specifications

A specification is a set of written specifications that a material, design, product or service must meet. It is a standard first step in any engineering design or product development process. It provides designers with the information they need to build new features and/or functionality of the product.

Product designers always have these mandatory questions:

-          What are we building?

-          What should the final build achieve?

-          How do we measure success?

With these in mind, design specifications allow product designers to answer them and achieve the final product they desire.

There are different types of specifications that are relevant to product designing such as:

-          Material specification

-          Functional/performance specifications

-          Standard specification

-          Test standard

However, we are only focussing on the first 2 which is Material Specification and Functional/Performance Specifications as we are only at the stage of preliminary design.

From this, we were given a sample design specifications table which we will have to imitate the format to fill up according to our own product design.
